With the temperature dropping, I like something warm to start the day.

It’s also great for digestion.

Putting cold into your body first thing, especially when it’s cold outside, can cause your digestion to stall.

It’s been resting all night, so what can be really helpful is to eat something warm for breakfast like this paleo protein porridge.

Many people throw carb-laden, sugary cereals in their belly in the morning.

The problem is that this rush of sugar can create an unhealthy blood sugar level in your body right off the bat.

When your sugar levels quickly rise and fall we can experience energy slumps.

That leads us on an unhealthy energy rollercoaster that leaves us depleted.

Keeping our blood sugar levels stable is the name of the game. Make sure you’re balancing these three things to do just that.

I made this grain free protein porridge with flax and hemp seeds.

Flax and hemp seeds are both nutrition powerhouses.

Flax has great fill-you-up fiber, both soluble and insoluble fiber. It supports the intestinal tract with it's slow release, improving digestion, detoxification and nutrient absorption.

Hemp and flax both have a good balance of omega 3's and 6's. And hemp seeds are a complete, plant based protein source, chock full of all or your essential amino acids.

So not only is this super healthy, but flax is also a great absorber and thickener, so it gives you an oatmeal-like texture, with no oats!

I use flax egg substitutes all of the time. It works similarly in this paleo porridge.

You always want to make sure to use ground flax since you can't get any of the great benefits of flax in its whole seed form.

You can buy flaxmeal pre-ground, but if you do, make sure to use it quickly as it can turn quickly.

Or buy flax in its seed form and then use a coffee grinder to grind it yourself. (You can click on the links to see the brands I like.)

You can customize this paleo protein porridge with your favorite fruit, nuts, and spices.

I'm a big blueberry fan. They're high in antioxidants and fiber, but low on the glycemic index. They also taste great.

I like to add them to the pot at the end of cooking, and take a spoon and squish them on the side of the pan, so they open up and lend natural sweetness.

If you have a bigger sweet tooth, you can add honey or maple syrup as well.

Makes 3 - 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups non-dairy milk (coconut, almond, hemp)

  • 1 vanilla pod, split open with seeds scraped

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

  • 1/4 cup hemp seeds

  • 1/4 cup freshly ground flax seeds

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

  • Optional: top with blueberries, walnuts, honey, maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Place your non-dairy milk and the contents of the vanilla pod in a small pot and warm. Once you reach a gentle simmer, add the cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom and stir. After it's combined, add the hemp, flax, and coconut and allow to cook through over low heat. It will thicken over 10 minutes. It will thicken even more once cooled so if you refrigerate the leftovers, warm in a pot with additional liquid when you're ready to eat again. Add any preferred toppings you'd like. I like throwing in blueberries and smashing them against the side to release its natural sweetness in the pot. You can also top with your favorite nut and/or sweetener.
